Written for the Web UK Magazine, Marillion's Fan Club, about our gig at the Marillion Weekend 2005 (www.marillionweekend.com)
It was obvious when we arrived on Friday night that we were in a special place. We were dropping off our equipment back stage as Marillion were playing their set - and a song had just finished. The cheer that erupted from the crowd was immense - they were well up for it, and it got a buzz going between all of us. After the Marillion set we finally met up with Erik - who you may know works for Marillion in various capacities! He had been there since Thursday, and apparently things had been very rocky, and he was completely shagged out... so we sent him off to bed and celebrated on his behalf!
This year has been busy for The Plugs. We were recording all winter and pushed ourselves to get our debut EP finished in time for this weekend. We all went a bit mad as deadlines approached - and just as we finished it, we had to jump straight into a few furious rehearsals and a low-key local gig to iron out any glitches in the set. So after a few weeks of mild panic we were all buzzing with both fear and excitement as we met up for sound check around 4:00 on Saturday. We got a good sound both on and off stage - we were ready as we were going to be.
Our show time was an early (maybe a little too early?!) 6:00. As we walked on stage the crowd had an expectant look on their faces; they were there waiting for Marillion, but at least seemed ready to be entertained. We launched into our first song and the sound and the lights and the crowd combined to fill us up with that indescribable buzz you only get from playing live! Exhausted and exhilarated, we left the stage and carried that buzz with us for the rest of the weekend... (...and Spencer carried his to the dance floor later that evening!)
Thanks to Marillion for inviting us and thanks to all of you who caught our set - especially Paul Tinker, who got so into The Plugs 'Big-Wigby' vibe that he helped sell CDs for us! It was a strange and fun, and we'd certainly do it again...
-Steve (and the rest of The Plugs: Spencer, Tom, Erik, and Clam)
