Spencer said that 3rd is the new first. I'll go with that!
We wouldn't have normally considered doing a "Battle of the Bands" type of contest, but the allure of $100,000 was really what motivated us. You can buy a lot of guitar strings with that kind of cash! We arrived and did feel a bit out of place, working out that on collective age alone we should have easily won, but I guess the judges look at musicianship as well...
But once we hit the stage in a frantic (and frankly the quickest we've ever managed) set-up, we launched in to the new high-octane version of I Want to Believe and the crowd were bouncing along within seconds. We then headed straight into Car Crash and the bouncing continued, with special stand-out performances to the 2 ladies in the front row grooving along nicely in the 'disco bits'... and for a bunch of people who have never seen The Plugs, and who specifically came to support other bands, clapping along to the breakdown and erupting into a massive cheer was the best we could have hoped for.
And to the lot of you who waited at the stage door to give us hugs - I'm really sorry to not be able to remember your names; we were all a bit spaced out. So thanks to our new fans in Birmingham, and especially to you lot who handed out the flyers - we're already on the phone to the venue, and should be back soon!
